What is ghostQR?
GhostQR lets you create layered (fragmented) QR codes that hide sensitive information
across multiple printable fragments. It’s inspired by the principles of SeedSigner. I wanted to add another layer of protection with fragmented QR
code layering. Yes, yes, I know I could simply secure my seed with a passphrase, but where’s the fun in that?
Soon after, however, I discovered that this tool could also have more creative and artistic applications than I ever imagined.
What does ghostQR do?
Instead of encoding your entire secret (like an entropy, passphrase, or private note) into a single QR code,
this generator splits the information across multiple visual "layers". Each layer is mostly noise on its own
— but when you stack them together physically (ex. using transparent sheets), the original QR code becomes visible.
How does it work?
- • You enter your data for QR code.
- • You choose the number of layers (max 69).
- • The data is randomly distributed into multiple QR canvases.
- • Each canvas is printable and includes optional text above and below (max 25 characters)
the QR — this text is also redistributed across layers (like the QR), allowing full sentences
to appear only when all layers are stacked (e.g. hints, labels, or SeedSigner fingerprint and password).
But you should never keep real passwords in the same place anyway!
Example use cases
- • Store each layer in a separate location — like a multisig setup.
- • Share layers with family members — no one holds the full key alone.
- • Hiding secrets or creating puzzle games...
! About optional text
Each QR layer lets you add a small line of text (25 characters max) at the top and bottom. These text fields are:
- Evenly distributed across layers (like the QR itself).
- Useful for organizing or identifying pieces.
- Visibly aligned and offset to build a readable sentence when stacked.
Max text length is limited to
25 characters for print clarity.
Layer orientation and alignment can be done with two
+ characters next to the dashed borders .
Output options
After generating the QR layers, you can:
- Preview them in your browser.
- Print a clean A4 sheet for backup.
- Download each layer as a transparent PNG for laser-printing on plastic sheets or film.
Optional: Add custom logo
Want to personalize the QR layers? Upload a small logo image — it will be embedded into the center
of each QR code before export. Make sure it has good contrast and is not too large (12% size is ideal).
